THE CLIENT
Western Canadian law firm with over 100 years of experience delivering legal services across the province of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. With a team of more than 120 lawyers, the firm supports clients in sectors such as energy, health care, education, insurance, and Indigenous business. Known for its expertise in corporate, litigation, and regulatory matters, the firm combines regional insight with national reach to deliver practical legal solutions that meet the demands of evolving industries.
THE CHALLENGE
The client wanted to explore the role of AI in modernizing legal services, starting with a high-impact but manageable use case: automating the creation of a last will and testament. They needed a structured way to validate whether a conversational AI assistant could walk users through key questions and produce a document aligned with the province of Alberta’s legal requirements.
The goal was to demonstrate that AI could add real value to a traditionally manual process, and do so quickly, without the complexity of a full product build. The client needed to go from concept to proof of value in just a few weeks, using the project as a way to validate both the technical feasibility and user experience of an AI-powered solution.

THE SOLUTION
Dura Digital’s AI Agents Studio led a focused, two-week sprint to bring the concept to life. In week one, the team worked with the client to identify the right platform, use case, and legal scope. After testing different options, a Custom GPT built within OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform was selected for its natural conversational flow, low barrier to entry, and flexible deployment.
To enable accurate and user-friendly interactions, the team engineered a structured prompt flow that guided the AI through a precise sequence of questions which mirrors the logic a lawyer might use when gathering information for a will. Each prompt was carefully crafted to align with Alberta’s legal standards, ensuring that user responses triggered the right content and structure in the final document.
The assistant then generated a fully formatted last will and testament, structured, readable, and ready for legal review. The output validated that generative AI can produce compliant legal drafts and demonstrated how conversational agents can make complex legal processes more accessible.
The working prototype delivered clear proof of value, showing how AI can reduce friction in legal workflows and laying the foundation for future applications in document automation.
THE RESULTS
The prototype made an immediate positive impression. When demoed to internal stakeholders, it clearly showed how conversational AI simplifies legal workflows and deliver real value. The user experience felt intuitive from the start, guiding people through a complex task like will creation in a way that was clear, approachable, and easy. It opened the door to bigger conversations about what’s next, and how AI could become a meaningful part of the firm’s services going forward.
As the project sponsor shared, “The turnaround on this proof of concept was fast. We quickly went from discussing potential use cases to interacting with a real solution that brought those ideas to life. What used to take months can now literally happen in days.”
